The Gold Lab has recently published a study that rigorously examines the link between changes in pupil size and activity in the locus coeruleus (LC), and provides the first thorough measurement of the link between changes in pupil size and activity in the arousal system.

Several researchers have now moved into the 4th floor of Goddard Labs, and the space is connected to the Richards Labs. CNI has now expanded to include both the 4 Richards and 4 Goddard spaces. Monthly events will be held in the 4 Goddard space, and the weekly CNI Chalk Talk events will resume on Tuesday, August 30 in the 4 Richards Seminar Room.

In March 2015, a group of NGG students led by CNI faculty member Maria Geffen organized a two-day, hands-on neuroscience lesson for students at the Independence Charter School in Philadelphia. The team taught the “Build-A-Brain” lesson, which focuses on the specialized functions of different brain regions. The NGG students staffed five stations, each station focusing on a specific brain region and offering an activity to illustrate brain function or sense.

In the summer of 2014, the Computational Memory Lab (CML) at the University of Pennsylvania began work on the "Restoring Active Memory" project, a four-year, nationwide, nine-site effort led by the the lab and funded by a grant worth up to $22.5 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The grant, conceived under President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative, was established with the important goal of helping veterans with traumatic brain injury regain losses to memory.

Penn Engineering faculty Danielle Bassett has been awarded a 2014 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Bassett’s laboratory uses tools from complex systems and network science to study the structure and dynamics of the human brain at the level of large-scale neural circuitry.
