Systems neuroscience beyond the tuning curve
The idea of the tuning curve as a summary of neural function and a set of ideas about neural computation has proven incredibly fruitful and dominated half a century of systems neuroscience. But the application of this framework in cognitive domains and to the prefrontal cortex has not yet produced the same sort of compelling picture as in vision and motor systems. In this talk, I'll discuss recent work from our lab on statistical approaches for analyzing neural data that attempt to reach beyond the tuning curve paradigm, allowing for non-repeated behaviors and single-trial neural analysis.
