Smelling odors in stereo: a putative cortical mechanism in the human brain

The human nose, often thought of as a singular sensory organ, contains two distinct sensory channels arising from its two nostrils. However, relatively little is known about if and how the olfactory system can leverage its dual sensory inputs to inform olfactory function. In this talk, I will present a putative cortical mechanism that may allow the olfactory system to differentiate inputs from the two nostrils using intracranial EEG recordings from human piriform cortex.
